I'm looking for some feedback and recommendations on a great GPS or Data Recorder that is tough, can take a lot of abuse while out mountain biking and captures the GPS signal well without loosing any data points while out riding and hitting low gullies and dense mountainous forest areas.
I hope I've listed enough information for a starting point on this discussion, but I'm sure I may have left out some things I should consider. I've never owned a GPS or Data recorder... so I have zero experience and no real idea of what I should consider.
If you have any suggestions I haven't listed that I should consider and recommendations on why I should chose one product over another, please let me know.
Hi, Not sure where you live in the world but in Europe you can get a Satmap Activ 10. I bought one last month and have been very happy with it, never lost a signal and can even turn it on and get a signal inside the house. I use it on my touring bike to map and record bike rides and routes for bike touring. It stands some shaking about and seems to be able to get wet in the rain without problem. The accuracy of the GPS signal is usually about 16ft, which is OKfor me, about the width of a road where I live. The handlebar attachment is very solid and the unit does not move however much shaking about there is on the bike.
You can have a look at the product website at www.satmap.com.
Others wil have their favorites and Garmin seems to be the most popular and widely available.
My question is similar if anyone can assist. My sport is endurance racing on horseback. I am wanting to know if the iphone gps application will work in situations similar if not exact to mountain biking, remote terrain, gullies etc.I need to know distance traveled and average speed. I figure there are more mountain bikers out there trying it right now than endurance racers.
I've been riding for more than 25 years and have tried just about everything. I've been really impressed with the new iPhone and from what I understand the features that are coming will really help users with things like emergency calls and allowing others to know your location. The accuracy has been great, on and off road for me and the features have been getting better each week that mapmyride launches.
if you want a phone with great gps and tracking functions you should look at the sony ericsson W760i walkman phone. it has great apps such as google maps and tracker which give you average speed, distance, energy used and also plots graphs with variable axes for you. the tracker app is free to use but the google maps use the internet so data charges apply. but i really like tracker cause it gives you an outline of your route as well
