We're happy to announce that we've officially released our new mapping tool to MapMyRide.com and the other sites. We've taken all your feedback and have made improvements to the tool and are continuing to do so ...
Please check it out and let us know what you think!
If you are having specific issue, please also add your browser and browser version. (i.e, IE6, FF3, Safari 2.0) Also, please paste a copy of the link to the mapping tool you are using. Many of these issues relate to Version 3.0 which is why we have a newer version 3.1!
Cheers,
-Kevin & the rest of the MapMyFitness Team
jr98664,
Thanks so much for the feedback -- Let me ask you a couple questions to get more detail. Can you also provide the link to the mapping tool you just used?
1) If you are in a city and then you save your route, is the zip-code the only field not being popualated? We try to pre-populate the form with as much information as we have based on a reverse lookup. What specific city/state were you routing in?
2) For privacy reasons we needed to make 'public' an opt-in feature so people didn't overlook and make publically available their home location or work location. Would this be more suited as a user prference? ie, default all new routes to public?
3) The Add-Workout type field is actually based off of the workout calendar, but you're right, we should also use the Route Type if you didn't use the Workout Calculator. We'll look at that first thing in the morning (as well as the 00:00:00 workout times)
Thanks jr98664!
-Kevin
We're looking for a way to allow people to toggle edit mode off if they want to plot near the route. We recommend zooming but we should have an update for this soon...
As for the 're-center' option -- look in the Map Settings. It's now a saveable preference!
Cheers,
-Kevin
This is good stuff.
1) Ad -- Many users have complained about the Ad taking up too much space. Realistically, compared to the previous version and more importantly the version before that, the ad and the ad container takes up a lot less real-estate than the dedicated panel to the left (previous version) or the full-height add to the right (oldest version). This ad placement is also moveable so you can place it where it causes the least inconvenience.
2) Auto-Center -- this is a map setting. Set it, then click the 'Save' button and this setting will persist. If you are logged in, it is actually saved to your profile. If it is still not saving, can you please send us your browser and version?
3) IE6 - There are known issues with IE6 (hence IE7 and IE8) but we're working on trying to come up with IE6 design workarounds. Currently we are aware of two IE6 issues: a) Jump-To box doesn't allow text selection and the cursor doesn't appear, and b) IE6 doesn't allow for transparent images (PNG) so the zoom-background is just a blob. We're working on these as I type!
Thanks Guys!
Cheers,
-Kevin
I used the new mapping tool but couldn't save the route. Kept gettin the following error message.
Please fix the following:
Please enter no more than 0 characters.
Everything that was mandatory was filled in correctly.

1) Ad -- Many users have complained about the Ad taking up too much space. Realistically, compared to the previous version and more importantly the version before that, the ad and the ad container takes up a lot less real-estate than the dedicated panel to the left (previous version) or the full-height add to the right (oldest version). Actually, that's not so. The ad can be moved, but it will not stay where you put it, it keeps coming back right under your cursor, making it impossible to actually use the site. It isn't so much an ad as it is extortion: pay up and we'll make this horrible ad go away. It isn't persuasive and it isn't cute, and I'm definitely not amused.

2) Auto-Center -- this is a map setting. Set it, then click the 'Save' button and this setting will persist. If you are logged in, it is actually saved to your profile. If it is still not saving, can you please send us your browser and version?

Yes it is a map setting, but with Firefox 3.0.x on Linux that setting has no effect. Autocenter is always on, no matter what the checkbox says. I never want autocenter, but since December or so it is always on.
I discovered yesterday your new approach to route notes. It makes the site worthless to me. I used to be able to create a route, copy and paste the notes into a spreadsheet and produce cue sheets. Now, I have to retype the notes, because they can no longer be copied.
We'll have our team look at your issues in FF3.0 in Linux.
I also like your comment about the cut/paste notes -- I'll take a look at what we can do on the view side. Did you know our printing option even includes things like foldable cue-sheet views as we auto-do this for you?
TallGaloot: We're going to be releasing a more map-centric search option soon so keep your eye out for it! We've decided to move it off of the 'create' page as it was confusing to a lot of other users.
Cheers,
-Kevin
telford: can you please send us an email using the feedback system with your browser, version, and a screenshot of this issue?
Cheers,
-Kevin
A problem with all the mapping tools is that they don't use the mi/km preference setting that I have saved. Every time I start a new route or open one I've already saved, I have to change the pull-down to display 'km'.
Another nice feature to have would be a preference setting for which map view (road, hybrid, satellite, etc.). I really like the hybrid but I have to select it each time.
Thanks,
Leslie
Still trying to get a succesful import from my Garmin Forerunner 405.
Not working to well yet or am I expecting to much ?
When I eventualy got it working there were a lot of red lines cutting corners. Possibly mixing it up with heart rate monitoe data.
I'm having difficulty with the notes feature. For some reason, the system isn't automatically noting all of my turns, and I don't have any idea how to manually insert a note.
I have done a couople of maps already with the new version and it works pretty good.
It is frustrating, however, to get the ID bracelet ad which cannot be closed. Also the welcome block keeps coming up each time I logon or start a new map even after I checked the block to now show it again.
Would be nice if this version could have a "from" and "to" address or location to more easily drae route maps.
thasaint:
Can you paste which version of the mapping tool you are using? I ran through your numbers using our newest version (http://www.mapmyride.com/create_new) and the calories calculated correctly.
bdixon:
To manually insert a note, click on a point (ie., the small square image) or a custom marker icon and a info-window will open. You can type your note in there. Adding Custom Icons will also auto add notes.
We're soon to release an update addressing most of the issues above so keep your eye out for it!
Cheers,
-Kevin
Hi,
When I use the new tool to create my maps I always get an API error, is there something I am supposed to do, or is this a bug? If so, please do not discontinue the old mapping tool until it is fixed. I like it just fine.
Liz
Elizabeth-
Can you give a bit more detail about seeing an "API Error"? What is the URL in your browser when you see this?
It is virtually impossible to edit a route. Points do not move and can't be deleted. The only way to change a route is it to undo it from the very end, which is a huge waste of time. There is no help screen on editing.
All Mapping Tool 3.1 discussions have been moved to this forum so please click the link if you wish to add anything. We've had to consolidate as too many discussions were occuring about the same thing! We've also released an update on February 19 that addressed a lot of the issues reported...

Thank you!

I tried the new tool, but it greys out the panning feature and I do not like the "hand" rather than the "crossbar".
I am 63 years old and just started walking for my health within the last year. I like to look at the area to decide just where I'll walk before I start, which is why I like the panning feature.
I use AOL and IE 7 and Foxfire and in every browser the panning feature is greyed out.
Other than that, I really like "Map My Walk". It lets me set goals for myself.
